However, replacement is only necessary when you need your card on an urgent basis. Or you don’t remember your nine-digit Social Security number. Most people have photocopies of their social security card with them, so they can always carry out tasks like filing for tax, or apply for a loan without any issues. 

The authorities use your nine-digit Social Security number to keep a track of your wages or self-employment earnings. If your social security card is lost or stolen and you need to present you can also manage to dodge the situation by presenting your pay stub, W-2 (wage and tax statement) or SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement). In addition, your tax documents with all your personal details like name, address, phone number and most importantly social security number can also be used as a proof form your social security account.

To apply for a replacement social security card online, you need to be a citizen of the United States, 18 years or older and have a US mailing address. You can also provide the address of a rented apartment. If you live in an RV or a van, simply provide the home address of your parents or another close relative. For identification proof, you also need a driver’s license. This is mandatory if you stay in Delaware or Wisconsin.
